Olean Police Chief Vacancy
August 12, 2014 Olean - William J Aiello, Mayor of the City of Olean will schedule interviews for the new Police Chief in the next two weeks.
“After a canvass of the Olean Police Department, three current members of department showed interest in being interviewed for the provisional appointment,” Mayor Aiello said. “Each candidate meets the minimum qualification to be appointed provisionally.”
In order to receive a permanent appointment the candidate will have to pass the Civil Service test for Chief of Police and be within the top three highest scores.
“I have formed a committee to interview the candidates,” Mayor Aiello added. “The committee consists of former police personnel from the Olean Police Department, one member of the Common Council and members of the community.”
Mayor Aiello continued, “My belief in residency for Department Heads has not changed, but I have to work within the parameter that was set by the Common Council in 2008 when they waived the residency requirement. I also have to abide by Civil Service rules which are set by the Cattaraugus County Civil Service Commission. I hope to have a new Chief of Police in place by the August 26, 2014 Council Meeting or the September 9, 2014 Council Meeting.”
