DPW Press Release 4/17/2023 Mosquito Larvicides Application

NOTICE TO CITY OF OLEAN RESIDENTS
APPLICATION OF MOSQUITO LARVICIDES

Please be advised that the City of Olean Department of Public Works may be undertaking the application of ground larvicides in certain areas of the City, subject to New York State approval, where standing water is a problem for the purpose of controlling the mosquito population.  The following larvicides could be applied:

AquaBac (200 G) Mosquito Biolarvicide Granule               EPA Registration #62637-3
Bactimos Briquets                                                              EPA Registration #6218-47

The law requires the publication of the following CAUTION statement:
HAZARDS TO HUMANS:  AVOID CONTACT WITH EYES OR OPEN WOUNDS

The application will take place when the mosquito larvae reach a certain stage.  Weather permitting, treatment could begin in May.

There are several areas throughout the City which may be treated.  A map showing areas to be treated is on file in the Department of Public Works Office, Room 206 of the Municipal Building.  It can be viewed Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except holidays.  The map may be modified as conditions require and subject to NYS approval.  Copies of the labels from the pesticides are also available upon request.  Please contact the Department of Public Works at 376-5651.

This ground application will not replace Cattaraugus County Health Department’s traditional mosquito control effort.

The City will not arrange for the application of larvicide on property until
and unless the property owner gives written consent.
