Mayor’s Bio
William J. Aiello, Mayor of the City of Olean, NY, was born in Olean in 1952 to Frank (Chic) and Gloria J. Aiello. Mayor Aiello is married to the former Patricia A. Wentworth of Friendship, NY. They have two daughters, one son, twelve grandchildren and a soon-to-be great granddaughter.
Mayor Aiello served a thirty-two year career with the City of Olean Police Department and retired with the rank of Captain. In 1990, he became the City’s Juvenile Officer and served on the State of New York Police Juvenile Officers Association, holding a number of positions in the association, including Executive Director. He received the Youth Officer of the Year Award from the Association.
He has served as a part time instructor at the Olean Campus of Jamestown Community College and at the Olean BOCES Center. He is certified as a Police General Topics Instructor, Range Officer, Evaluator, Juvenile Police Administrator and Security Guard Course Instructor.
Mayor Aiello was twice elected to the Cattaraugus County Legislature, serving consecutive terms from 2008-2013. He was the Majority Leader for two years.
He attended St. Johns School, and is a graduate of Olean High School, the BOCES Vocation Center and the Chautauqua Police Academy. He completed numerous continuing education courses geared toward police work. Most recently he graduated from the Pelletier Institute with the New York State Association of Counties.
Mayor Aiello, an OHS football and baseball player, is on the Olean High School Sports Wall of Fame. In the past, he had coached Little League and Senior League Baseball as well as East Olean Pee Wee, Pony and Midget Football. He serves on the Big Thirty Football Committee and volunteers for the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament.
He has received the Good News Award from the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, the Salute to Olean Award from the YMCA, the William J. O’Connell Memorial Award for BOCES Outstanding Alumni, honored by the Section 6 Football Federation for service for officiating high school football in 2019 and inducted into the Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame 2023.
Mayor Aiello served as the Dempsey Club Fireworks Chairman from 1977 until 1989. He was on the Board of Directors for the Olean Youth Bureau and the Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau. He served on the Advisory Boards for Olean Youth and Recreation, Cattaraugus County Criminal Justice, New York State Runaway and Homeless Youth and the Cattaraugus/Olean Airport. He has volunteered for the YMCA, the Cattaraugus County Department of Aging, and for the past 12 years has been on the GOACC Board of Directors.
He has served on the New York Conference of Mayors’ Executive Board since 2018, and elected as Treasurer, Second Vice President, and First Vice President. In May 2025, he will be sworn in as President.
He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, the BPO Elks Club of Olean, the Pulaski Club of Olean and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
