Mayor’s Press Release – Mayor Aiello Begins Term as NYCOM President

Olean Mayor William J. Aiello Begins Term as
President of the New York State Conference of Mayors

ALBANY, NY – Mayor William J. Aiello of the City of Olean has become the 99th President of the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials (NYCOM), effective May 29, 2025.

“It is an honor to be entrusted by my fellow mayors to serve as NYCOM’s President,” said Mayor Aiello. “Throughout my years in public service, I’ve witnessed the pivotal role local governments play in shaping vibrant communities. As we navigate the road ahead, I am committed to ensuring that the voices of our cities and villages resonate in Albany and beyond. Together, we’ll advocate for the resources and recognition our municipalities deserve.”

“Mayor Aiello brings a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for his community,” said NYCOM Executive Director Barbara Van Epps. “His thoughtful leadership and practical, boots-on-the-ground perspective will be invaluable as NYCOM continues to advocate for the needs of cities and villages across New York State. We are fortunate to have him at the helm during such a critical time for local governments.”

Mayor Aiello was elected mayor of the City of Olean in 2014 and is currently serving his third term. Prior to being mayor, he served two terms in the Cattaraugus County Legislature, including two years as Majority Leader. He also spent 32 years with the Olean Police Department, rising to the rank of Captain and earning state certification as a Juvenile Officer.

A lifelong Olean resident, Mayor Aiello is known for his deep commitment to civic engagement and local youth. Over the years, he has coached Little League and youth basketball, taught at area institutions and volunteered for numerous local initiatives. His leadership style is grounded in approachability, common sense and a strong belief in the importance of investing in the next generation. When he’s not at City Hall or out in the community, Mayor Aiello enjoys spending time with his family, supporting local sports and taking in all that his hometown has to offer.

Serving as NYCOM officers from May 29, 2025, to May 14, 2026, are:

  • President – Mayor William J. Aiello, City of Olean
  • First Vice President – Mayor William F. Brazill, Village of Minoa
  • Second Vice President – Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, City of Mount Vernon
  • Treasurer – Mayor Kathy Sheehan, City of Albany

NYCOM serves and represents 578 cities and villages in New York State, ranging from the smallest village to the City of New York. NYCOM has been in existence since 1910.
