Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca and Olean Mayor William Aiello will announce a collaborative effort between their governments to find long-needed solutions to the chronic overflow of untreated sewage from Olean into the Allegheny River. A joint press conference will be help on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 2 p.m. at the City’s South 4th Street Pump Station, located at the foot of South 4th Street, Olean.

Since 2007, there have been 46 recorded discharges from Olean’s wastewater treatment system into the river, resulting in millions of gallons of dangerous waste flowing through communities downstream, including the Seneca Nation’s Allegany Territory. The river, which the Seneca people call Ohi:yo’, meaning “beautiful river” is an important natural and cultural resource for the Seneca people.
