Mayor’s Press Release – Olean Earth Day Events Postponed until April 29, 2023

Olean Earth Day Events Postponed until April 29, 2023

April 19, 2023–Olean ̶ Due to inclement weather reports for Saturday, April 22, 2023, the City of Olean has postponed the Franchot Park Earth Day event until Saturday, April 29 2023.

The Franchot Park event will give the park a facelift and will include raking, picking up litter, refurbishing the structures in the park and contracting Vincent Alejandro to paint a mural on the handball wall. Numerous residents and organizations, such as BonaResponds, have already offered their services.

The land for Franchot park was donated by Nicholas V.V. Franchot, Olean’s first Mayor. In offering the land to the City, Mr. Franchot’s son, Lt. Col. C. Paschal Franchot said, “The gift of his generosity, in which shall be heard for years to come the laughter of happy children, protected in their play; and which will provide as well a place of rest and relaxation for older people and another spot of beauty in the city he has loved.”

The City not only accepted this donation but has worked hard to fulfill Mr. Franchot’s dream. Over the years, the City has made significant improvements including, a gazebo, pavilions, a playground, a wading pool, a basketball court, baseball and softball fields and most recently a disc golf course, as well as the Children’s Memorial Garden, orchards and a walking trail through the park known as Johnny Appleseed Lane.

Over the years, Franchot Park has become a center for family fun, relaxation, festivity and tradition. The April 29th Earth Day event will get the park ready for the summer season. If residents or organizations are interested in volunteering, please call Mayor Aiello’s office at 716 376-5615.
