City of Olean Media Release
312 North Thirteenth Street Olean Structure Fire
In the early morning hours of Sunday, July 16th at 0346, City of Olean Firefighters were alerted to a structure fire at 312 North Thirteenth Street. Fire Department units were on location with two engines and one ambulance within four minutes of dispatch. Fire department personnel were met with a smoke filled structure and flames showing above the roofline of the south side of the structure. With flames impinging on an adjacent structure, fire crews stretched a 1 inch ¾ hose line and extinguish the fire within 6 minutes. The first arriving crew primary and secondary search of the residence was negative for results due to no occupants home at time of incident. No injuries occurred during the incident, and one firefighter was transported to Olean General for precaution.
The Olean City Fire Department was assisted by Deputy 4 coordinator and Trans Am Ambulance on scene as well as Weston Mills and Allegany who stood by for mutual aid. We would like to thank all entities for their support in our time of need. The exact cause of the structure fire has been deemed electrical by the Olean City Fire Investigation Team.
The City of Olean Fire Department wants to remind the community that extension cords are intended for temporary use and should never be used to connect a major appliance. The biggest concern with using an extension cord to power an appliance is using the wrong cord, which can lead to overheating of the cord, damage to the appliance, and increased risk of fire or electric shock.
